California: changes in writing, signed before the work

What the Business and Professions Code says about written, signed change orders for home improvement and service and repair work.

Verified on against the official text on leginfo.legislature.ca.gov.

In plain words

  • Section 7159 covers home improvement contracts where the total price is over $500. It says the contract and any changes to it are to be in writing and signed by both sides before the work they cover starts.
  • It says a change order becomes part of the contract only if it is in writing and signed before the work it covers starts, and that a change order describes the scope of the change, the cost added or taken off, and the effect on the payment schedule.
  • Section 7159.10 covers small service and repair contracts of $750 or less that meet its conditions. It says changes to those contracts are also to be in writing and signed or acknowledged.
  • Both sections have more requirements than the parts quoted here. Read the full text at the links below.
